Mobility aids in Singapore
Walking frames, rollators, walking sticks, and crutches.
What to look for
- A rollator (wheeled frame with a seat) is suitable for those with moderate balance problems who walk regularly.
- A standard walking frame gives more stability but must be lifted with each step — harder for those with weak arms.
- Walking sticks should be the correct height: the handle should be at wrist level when standing straight.
- Anti-tip rubber ferrules should be replaced when worn — worn tips are a fall risk.
Buy or rent?
Mobility aids used in short-term recovery (e.g. after hip replacement) are ideal for rental. Long-term users are usually better served by purchase, as rental costs accumulate.
Subsidy options
MOH Home Caregiving Grant and SG Enable’s AT Fund may apply. Discuss with AIC.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a physiotherapist to prescribe my walking aid?
Ideally yes. A physiotherapist or occupational therapist can assess your gait and prescribe the most appropriate aid. Using the wrong aid can increase fall risk.
Are rollators suitable for use outside?
Larger-wheeled rollators cope better on outdoor surfaces. Check that the brakes are functioning and adjusted correctly before outdoor use.
How do I know if an aid is the right height?
The handle should be at approximately wrist level when standing with arms relaxed. An OT or physiotherapist can verify fit.
