Pressure care in Singapore
Anti-decubitus mattresses and cushions to prevent pressure injuries.
What to look for
- Alternating pressure mattresses (motorised, alternating cells inflate and deflate) are suitable for high-risk patients (immobile, poor circulation).
- Static foam or gel mattresses are appropriate for low-to-medium risk patients who reposition regularly.
- Wheelchair cushions are as important as bed mattresses — patients in wheelchairs for several hours per day are at high risk.
- Replace foam mattresses when they no longer spring back — a flattened foam provides no pressure relief.
Buy or rent?
Rental is practical for short-term post-surgical or post-hospital use. Long-term immobile patients typically need a purchased alternating pressure system.
Subsidy options
Alternating pressure systems for high-risk patients may be available via AIC equipment loan schemes. Check with AIC or the medical social worker.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my parent needs a pressure-relief mattress?
Any patient who is immobile for most of the day, has poor circulation, or has existing pressure injuries should be on a pressure-relief surface. Ask the hospital’s wound care nurse or physiotherapist for a risk assessment.
What is the difference between a static foam mattress and an alternating pressure mattress?
Static mattresses distribute weight passively. Alternating pressure mattresses actively cycle inflation to relieve pressure at different points. Alternating pressure is used for higher-risk patients.
Can I put a pressure-relief mattress topper on an existing bed?
Yes — mattress toppers are available and work on standard beds. However, for high-risk patients, a full alternating pressure mattress is more effective.
